Scholar’s Strategy Network // How Policymakers Use Your Research

At Flow Video, I had the exciting opportunity to design and animate a visually striking piece for SSN, drawing inspiration from their bold and impactful branding. I collaborated closely with the creative director to craft a seamless blend of design and motion, creating a compelling visual experience from start to finish.

With a heavy focus on "chapterizing" in this video, as there are four main ways policymakers use research, I gave each one a different color scheme based on the various shapes that SSN uses in their branding. You can see a very, very early, mostly text-based storyboard based on an older script here (pdf on Google Drive), and you can see an early animatic here (Youtube). It's interesting to go back and see how much this piece has changed over the course of working on it! The iterative nature of working collaboratively with both the internal team and the client really helped shape this piece.

I wanted to focus on transitions specifically, making them a little more interesting that just sliding on and sliding off every time. So when the gavel comes down, it's now the ground that the school grows on. When the bill is signed, the signature keeps moving and becomes a pie chart.

In the interest of time, we also utilized many stock assets, and I was able to adapt them to fit SSN's style guide quite easily.

This was also the first time in several years that I actually did a sound effects pass (many pieces I worked on previously either didn't require it, or the creative director at the time preferred to do himself since he had quite a bit more experience with it)- this is now something that I insist on adding to most pieces I make now. It really helps add to the motion and depth of every piece.

We also created 60s and 30s cutdowns of this video to use on various social media platforms.
